(Bronx, NY ) BAAD! – The Bronx Academy of Art & Dance (BAAD!) presents its annual spring dance festival THE BOOGIE DOWN DANCE SERIES 2011 from Thursday, May 5 through Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at BAAD!, 841 Barretto Street in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. The BOOGIE DOWN DANCE SERIES celebrates the growth of professional dance in the Bronx and takes its title from the borough’s nickname, The Boogie Down. The festival features a luscious mix of home grown Bronx dance and dance from around the city, and presents a diversity of dance in the Bronx.

Gallant will premiere her Synopses, a dance/music project with music by Lisa Bielawa. The Isadora Duncan dances on the program are two rarely seen 1914 works, Grand Marche, to music by Schubert, and Reflets D’Allemagne, three contrasting waltzes to piano music by Florent Schmitt. The dances were created during Duncan’s year at Bellevue outside Paris, following the tragic deaths of her children. All music on the program will be performed live.

This workshop will bring unity in mind, body and spirit in order to develop the strength, power, centeredness and peacefulness of the warrior way of life. You will learn three fundamental kata in the Art that if practiced regularly, will certainly bring you empowerment from the inside out.

The workshop covers Yin & Yang breathing exercises, karate stances/techniques, 3 kata for centeredness, building chi and speed, and Zen meditation. The workshop is very friendly and is open to everyone, whether you have a martial art background or not.

Gail Accardi works with dancers and others, especially those experiencing pain, injuries, alignment issues, or physical challenges of many kinds. She describes her work as creative physical problem solving; others call it body whispering. She draws on experience and ongoing study of dance, pilates, anatomy/kinesiology, somatics, and other moving and healing practices.
